Gazprom Nedra Conducted Integrated Training Exercises in the Kola Bay

An integrated emergency drill took place on 26 April in the waters of the Kola Bay to manage oil and petroleum product spill during the prospecting well construction on the Barents Sea shelf.

The event took place at the winter naval station of the Severnoye Siyaniye semi‑submersible rig. Along with experts from Gazprom Nedra LLC and the drilling rig crew, representatives of Gazprom Shelfproject JSC, the Federal Supervisory Natural Resources Management Service, FSBI Marine Rescue Service, Dikson Marine Rescue Coordination Centre, the EMERCOM Nenets Autonomous District Department, and contractors’ employees participated in the training activities.

The Beysug rescue vessel and the Neptun transport and towing vessel joined the manoeuvres.

Participants in the event jointly acted to contain and clean up a simulated diesel fuel spill of over 800 tonnes. Training manoeuvres to deploy oil recovery systems, collect oily water mixture and transfer it to a vessel for further transportation and disposal, as well as sorbent treatment of the water area, proved that all services and units were ready to respond to possible risks.

Integrated training exercises under current legislation were first arranged by Gazprom Nedra in advance of the navigation season. It anticipates the adoption of the Oil Spill Prevention and Response Plan for Arctic offshore exploration. The State Commission for Exercise Evaluation acknowledged that the organisational and technical resources available were sufficient to eliminate the greatest possible contamination volume.
