Gazprom Nedra LLC provided charitable support to Tumara, a wood buffalo farm owned by the Fund of Social and Economical Development of Suntarsky Ulus municipal district in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). As part of the company’s cooperation with the district administration, Gazprom Nedra funded the purchase of compound feed, materials and equipment for the care of the wild animals currently living in the nature park.

According to archaeological studies, wood buffalos coexisted with mammoths in the region that is now known as Yakutia. The descendants of these giant bulls later migrated to other continents, where this mammalian species faced a threat to its survival due to hunting and the destruction of its habitat; this ensured that the wood bison featured in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red Book.

Tumara is the third buffalo farm in Yakutia, where the international project to reintroduce wood buffalo has been in progress since 2006; the project envisages expanding the buffalo habitat by reintegrating them into their historical homeland. Since the Tumara farm was set up in 2020, the buffalo population in Suntarsky Ulus has doubled, reaching the current population count of 20 heads.

Anatoliy Grigoryev, the head of Suntarsky Ulus, expressed gratitude to Gazprom Nedra LLC for its involvement in the project which bears great environmental significance and high economic potential. “Buffalos represent a unique component to our region’s biodiversity, a newly found element of its natural mosaic. Furthermore, these giants of the forest generate considerable interest among tourists. Recent scientific observations indicate that the buffalos have adapted remarkably well to their new home in Tumara; however, the animals require adequate living conditions in enclosures and a balanced diet, especially during winter, to ensure that the population continues to maintain consistent growth” — noted Anatoliy Grigoryev, expressing hope for continued cooperation with Gazprom Nedra in this regard.
